Before I was the practitioner, I was the patient…
In my 20’s I had an amazing career and the world looked bright. I’d completed a business & marketing degree and landed roles with some of the most recognisable brands in the world – McDonald’s, Vodafone, Sony Films, Melbourne Airport, and more.
Then my health fell apart.
A bad gut infection, a high-stress environment, too little sleep and a mould-ridden rental (on top of a childhood full of allergies, illness, EBV and vaccine reactions), combined into the perfect storm. Food started making me sick. Severe bloating, cramping, nausea, hot sweats, unpredictable bowel symptoms. I couldn’t leave the house without knowing where the closest public bathroom was. My weight dropped to 37kg. All I could eat was pureed pumpkin, and even digesting that made me fall asleep.
I had to quit the career I loved.
For four years I sought answers – doctors, specialists, practitioners – a significant amount of testing, time and money, and still no answers. My doctor told me this was my “new normal” and that I needed to accept it.
I disagreed. If I broke my leg, that would heal. Why should the rest of my body be any different?
That question led me to natural medicine. I decided if I was going to heal, I had to take matters into my own hands. When I won a national scholarship to study a naturopathic medicine degree, and took that as a clear sign I was on the right path.
While studying I researched, learned, applied and healed myself. But life had more health learnings waiting for me.
EBV and Ross River Fever during my studies, led to chronic fatigue. A pelvic mesh implant triggered a complex immune and inflammatory response that took years to unravel. I’ve also had to navigate POTS, MCAS, vestibular migraine, mould illness, a tbi and binocular vision dysfunction. I carry a compound MTHFR gene variants that affect how my body processes and detoxifies.
I’ve faced every one of these challenges with natural medicine and I credit naturopathy, and the depth of investigation I’ve applied to my own health, with the quality of life I have today.
It also makes me a significantly better practitioner. Every condition I’ve navigated is a condition I understand from lived experience – not just from a text book.
When you work with me you aren’t trying to explain your health experiences to a healthy person who can’t comprehend it. I’ve been there, I get it and I understand.
Tell me, does my story sound a little like yours? If so, I’d love to hear about it. Leave a comment, or book a consultation so we can start restoring your health too.
Thanks for reading x
Cass
